BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
This is the incredible moment a heroic shopkeeper threatened at gunpoint stood up to a robber and disarmed him, captured in stunning CCTV footage.
Hunar Mohammed was doing his usual day job behind the till at a store in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, when a man came in and asked to purchase booze and cigarettes.
But as the 37-year-old packed up the goods on Saturday night, the thug pulled out a gun and demanded money from the till.
Despite his life being at risk, the brave Mohammed grabbed the weapon and chased him out of the store.
The weapon turned out to be a replica, which the shopkeeper, from Sulaymaniyah in Kurdistan, who came to the UK in 2010, was unaware of.
Speaking after the incident, he said: “It’s the first time this has ever happened in my life but I wasn’t that scared as everyone has guns in my country that they keep for security.
“I’ve handled a gun before as well. I did what any normal person would do to save their life.
“In this second, my mind said to do this and I did it.
“He didn’t leave with anything and for that I am glad.
“My family have said congratulations to me.
“My wife was scared when she first watched the video but she is okay now.
“My step-sons couldn’t believe it when they watched the video.
“They asked ‘How did you do that so quickly?'”
Luke Pearson, 24, of Stevenage Crescent, Borehamwood, has now been charged with robbery and having an imitation firearm.
Mr Mohammed added: “All the regular customers have been coming in and calling me a hero and asking to shake my hand.
