BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
This is the terrifying moment an off-duty police officer shot and killed a suspected robber who tried to attack her on a Brazilian street.
The Military Police agent, whose name has not been released, was walking by herself Sunday shortly before midnight in Butanta, a district in the city of Sao Paulo, when she encountered a heavy-set suspect.
A surveillance camera captured the moment Francisco Gonsalves dos Santos Junior, 40, parked his car on the dimly-lit street and rushed out of his vehicle as the officer crosses the street.
Dos Santos Junior subsequently blocked her path and tried to grab her but the cop quickly dodged him.
She then took a couple of steps back as she tried to defend herself from the menacing man who appeared to be twice her size.
The dodging police officer then withdrew her weapon from her waist and fired a single shot that floored the alleged assailant after he tried to wrest away her firearm.
Dos Santos Junior was declared dead at the scene.
Law enforcement officials registered the incident an attempted robbery but are still investigating the event, according to Brazilian news outlet Amazonas 1.
