Police are searching for a man who was shot after a failed robbery attempt at a convenience store in South Knoxville, Tennessee, on Dec. 20.

Authorities were called to City Gas, where an attempted robbery resulted in the perpetrator being shot at least once.

According to a Knoxville Police Department news release, a man walked into the store and pointed a gun at a clerk’s face. When he made his way to the cash register, he was greeted with an unpleasant surprise.

“As the suspect appeared from behind the lottery machine, the owner of the business shot at the suspect with his personal handgun,” stated the release. “The suspect and the business owner fired multiple times at each other as the suspect ran from the store. The suspect was hit at least one time.”

Investigators at the scene followed a trail of blood that led them to the spot where the suspect’s vehicle was parked. A witness told authorities the vehicle was a silver Dodge Caravan with black rims and a plastic back window held together with duct tape.
The robber was described as a black male, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 170 pounds. He was wearing a black ski mask and a navy blue hooded sweatshirt. No employees were injured during the shootout.
